\u201cSometimes we travel the world searching for blessings that were quietly surrounding us at home.\u201d<\/p>\n
Kwesi grew up in Ghana, where sunshine, warmth, rain, and the changing wet and dry seasons were familiar parts of everyday life.<\/p>\n
Most mornings, he stepped outside without wondering whether snow had blocked the road. He did not own a snow shovel, scrape ice from his car, or wear layers of heavy clothing before leaving for work.<\/p>\n
Then Kwesi moved abroad, and his first winter changed his perspective.<\/p>\n
The days became shorter, temperatures fell, and leaving home sometimes required careful planning around snow and ice.<\/p>\n
One evening, Kwesi called his mother in Ghana.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat is the weather like?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is warm. Why?\u201d she replied with a laugh.<\/p>\n
Kwesi smiled. For the first time, he appreciated something he had rarely considered a blessing.<\/p>\n
Africa is a vast continent with remarkably varied climates. Conditions differ greatly across the Sahara, tropical West Africa, the East African highlands, and the cooler regions of the south. Still, many parts of the continent experience substantial warmth and sunlight throughout the year.<\/p>\n
Weather shapes more than the clothes we wear. It can influence how we work, exercise, travel, socialize, and gather with others. Our surroundings may also affect our mood, energy, routines, and sense of connection.<\/p>\n
Familiarity can make us stop noticing what we have.<\/p>\n
We complain about the heat. We complain when the rains arrive. Then we travel elsewhere and discover that every climate brings its own challenges.<\/p>\n
The lesson is not that one climate is better than another. It is about learning to appreciate what has become ordinary.<\/p>\n
What have you grown so accustomed to that you no longer recognize its value? Your environment? Your family? Your community? Your health? Your freedom to step outside?<\/p>\n
Gratitude often begins when we stop treating ordinary blessings as guaranteed.<\/p>\n
The next time the African sun rises, pause. Feel its warmth. Notice it. Be grateful.<\/p>\n
What feels ordinary to you may be something another person deeply misses. Sometimes it takes distance to teach us the value of home.<\/p>\n
