\u201cThe true value of an inheritance is not only what a family receives, but whether the family still has one another after it is shared.\u201d<\/p>\n
A father dies. Family members gather for the funeral, where they cry, pray, and speak about love and unity.<\/p>\n
Then the funeral ends, and another story begins.<\/p>\n
Who owns the house? Who receives the land? Who controls the family business? What belongs to the spouse, the children, or the extended family?<\/p>\n
Suddenly, brothers stop speaking. Sisters become suspicious. A grieving widow may find herself defending the home she helped build.<\/p>\n
This is a painful reality for too many Ghanaian families. Sometimes, the greatest loss is not the property. It is the family itself.<\/p>\n
Inheritance disputes are rarely only about money. They often uncover jealousy, sibling rivalry, feelings of unfairness, and conflicts that were never resolved.<\/p>\n
One person says, \u201cI cared for our father, so I deserve more.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another responds, \u201cI am the eldest.\u201d<\/p>\n
Someone else insists, \u201cHe promised the property to me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Before long, property becomes more valuable than relationships.<\/p>\n
Parents should prepare their families while they are alive. Planning an inheritance is not inviting death. It is protecting loved ones from unnecessary confusion and conflict.<\/p>\n
Document what you own. Seek appropriate legal guidance. Communicate responsibly. Resolve family tensions where possible, and make your intentions clear.<\/p>\n
Proverbs 13:22 says, \u201cA good man leaveth an inheritance to his children\u2019s children.\u201d<\/p>\n
But inheritance is more than houses, land, and money. Parents must ask what they are truly leaving behind: property their children will fight over, or a legacy of wisdom, fairness, responsibility, and unity?<\/p>\n
One day, the house will belong to someone else. The land will remain, and the money will change hands. Broken relationships, however, may affect generations.<\/p>\n
Do not allow inheritance to turn love into bitterness or make property more valuable than people.<\/p>\n
A good inheritance transfers more than wealth. It passes on values, wisdom, responsibility, peace, and unity. Perhaps the greatest inheritance a parent can leave is a family that can still sit together after everything has been shared.<\/p>\n
