He had a respected career, a comfortable home, and the admiration of many people in his community.

But during a counseling session with Dr. David Rex Orgen, he shared a painful truth he had carried for decades.

“If I could relive one day of my life, I would.”

More than 30 years earlier, Michael allowed pride to destroy his marriage. He had many chances to apologize, but he believed time would fix the damage. It did not. His marriage ended, his children became distant, and regret followed him quietly for years.

“I thought regret would disappear with time,” he said. “Instead, it became heavier.”

When Regret Becomes Emotional Pain

Dr. David Rex Orgen explains that regret can become emotionally exhausting because it keeps the mind trapped between what happened and what could have been.

The brain replays painful memories. People imagine different words, better choices, and new outcomes. Over time, this can lead to anxiety, depression, guilt, and emotional fatigue.

Psychologists call this rumination. It is the repeated replaying of painful events without healing or resolution.

Healthy regret teaches a lesson and helps us change. Destructive regret makes us believe our past is our identity.

Michael’s healing began when he stopped asking, “Why did I do it?” and started asking, “How can I live differently from today?”

He wrote letters to his children. He apologized without excuses. Not every relationship was fully restored, but something inside him began to heal.

Dr. Orgen believes true courage means accepting responsibility without surrendering your future to your past.

No one can rewrite yesterday, but everyone can begin writing a different ending today.

If regret, guilt, anxiety, depression, grief, or emotional exhaustion is weighing you down, you do not have to face it alone.

Dr. David Rex Orgen provides professional counseling, mental health coaching, emotional wellness support, marriage and relationship counseling, leadership coaching, and personal development services.

To schedule a confidential counseling or emotional wellness session, call or text Dr. David Rex Orgen at (614) 753-3925.

“Your past may explain you, but it does not have to define you.”

By Dr. David Rex Orgen, Best-Selling Author and International Mental Health Expert

Learn how regret affects emotional health and how responsibility, apology, and counseling can help you heal and move forward.

[1
post-209","dorgen_resource","type-dorgen_resource","status-publish","hentry
["GET
